In pediatrics, what matters is not only relieving the visible complaint, but also trying to understand why that complaint appeared in the first place.
For example, when a child is gaining excess weight, focusing on weight alone is not enough. Alongside eating habits and physical activity, thyroid function, insulin resistance and metabolic causes may also need to be evaluated where necessary.
Similarly, when a child eats well and has a good appetite but is not gaining the expected weight, the reason may not simply be that they are “a naturally slim child.” Absorption problems, bowel disease, parasites, thyroid function or other medical causes may need to be considered.
And when a child refuses to eat and is not gaining weight, the answer is not always an appetite syrup. From reflux to nutrient deficiencies, from digestive problems to other illnesses, the possible causes of poor appetite need to be investigated.
This is the perspective at the heart of a functional and holistic approach to pediatrics: instead of addressing a symptom in isolation, evaluating the child's growth, nutrition, sleep pattern, digestive system, daily habits, environmental factors and medical history together.
Because in pediatrics the aim is not only to answer “How can we make this complaint go away?” but, when needed, to follow the question “Why did this complaint appear?”
This approach is not an alternative to standard pediatric assessment; it is a complementary perspective that treats the child as a whole.
